The property

A converted 1979 missile silo on 18.2 acres near Carlton, Kansas, with a Launch Control Center finished as living space and the underground shaft still open below it, listed at $1,600,500

A decommissioned 1979 missile silo on 18.2 acres outside Carlton, Kansas, listed at $1,600,500. The property’s Launch Control Center has been finished into roughly 2,500 square feet of living space, with two full bathrooms, and the silo shaft itself, 52 feet wide and 182 feet deep by the listing’s own measurements, remains open below it.

The land and setting

The parcel is 18.2 acres, reached by a deeded driveway roughly 100 feet wide running in from a paved road, with the property enclosed by barbed-wire fencing. The listing describes a solar-powered chain-link entrance gate with a remote keypad. The aerial photos show open Kansas farmland surrounding the site on all sides, with the fenced compound, its outbuildings and the long driveway visible inside the marked boundary.

A carport stands in the open field near the entry structures, along with a concrete pad fitted with electric, water and sewer hookups, which the listing describes as suited to motorhome parking or additional living arrangements.

The structure

Two concrete entry pods rise from the field, each with a steel door leading down into the complex. Below ground, the Launch Control Center has been finished with curved white walls, wood-look flooring, a kitchen with wood cabinets and stainless appliances, and a living area furnished with seating. Two full bathrooms are included in that finished space.

A steel stairway leads further down into the silo itself. The upper part of the shaft has been fitted out with bunk beds, seating and a small kitchenette inside its original cross-braced steel framework, photographed as furnished space rather than a finished interior. Below that, the shaft continues unfinished, with its original steel equipment racks and access structure still in place.

The listing states 200-amp electric service, rural district metered water, a lagoon, and two separate septic systems, one for the surface improvements and one for the underground structures. It also states a humidity control system and a cell signal repeater serving the below-ground space, with high-speed fiber internet available at the property. None of this is independently verified by us. Confirm directly with the agent and, for anything involving the underground structure specifically, with a contractor or engineer who has worked on a comparable conversion.

What to know before you call

This is not a conventional house, and the listing itself doesn’t treat it as one. Bedroom count, finished square footage above the stated 2,500-square-foot estimate, heating and cooling systems, and financing terms are all absent from the listing’s own facts panel. A property like this is also likely to be harder to finance conventionally than a standard single-family home. Ask the agent early about what financing options sellers have actually seen work.

The listing credits property taxes under $400 a year to the underground structures not currently being taxed by the county. The public tax record Zillow displays for this parcel shows $2,295 for 2025. Confirm the current tax situation, including whether that treatment of the underground space could change after a sale, directly with the Dickinson County appraiser’s office before relying on either figure.

This is our first property in the Carlton, Kansas market, and we don’t yet have a Kansas hub page linking into it. Anyone comparing it against other unconventional listings can see everything currently listed.
